Most young trees that fail around here die from how they were planted, not what they are. Buried too deep, circling roots left in place, the wrong species for the soil, or no water plan through the first August. We plant to avoid all four.
It starts with what you want the tree to do. Shade the west side of the house. Screen a neighbor. Replace a tree the last storm took, or meet a city replanting requirement after a removal. Then we match a species to your soil: sandy Cross Timbers ground in much of Keller, heavier clay in parts of Southlake and Colleyville. Cedar elm, bur oak, Shumard oak, chinkapin oak, Mexican plum, desert willow and other proven North Texas trees are regulars.
